“We are creating a society where people can contribute and participate on equal terms, regardless of their preconditions”

Research on universal design points the way towards a more inclusive construction where diverse user needs are considered from start to finish.
Universal design as the key to inclusive construction
Anne Kathrine Frandsen is an architect and senior researcher at the Department of Construction, City and Environment at Aalborg University. Among other things, she researches how to maintain the ambition to create universal design throughout the construction process. The primary barrier to thinking universal design into a building, according to Anne Kathrine Frandsen, is often a lack of knowledge. This knowledge must be found among people with disabilities. Universal design is about creating high-quality construction with an understanding of diversity in use, i.e. a breadth of user needs and users. Universal design contains an ethical dimension, in its ambition to create an inclusive society where we can accommodate everyone as far as possible.Anne Kathrine considers the Bevica Foundation's research network as an opportunity to bring together the academic breadth and research insights needed to create an inclusive society.
