Common space: Life between the houses in a universal design perspective

Videoen giver indblik i universelle designvandringer som metode til at forstå, hvordan byrum kan opleves inkluderende eller ekskluderende. Gennem konkrete eksempler vises, hvordan små designændringer kan skabe større deltagelse og fællesskab for alle.

Carsten Hvid Nielsen, postdoc at Aalborg University, talks about universal design walks as a method to understand how urban spaces and common areas are experienced by the people who use them in everyday life. Through Carsten Hvid Nielsen's communication, the viewer gets a thorough understanding of how moving through the landscape together with residents can highlight otherwise unseen barriers and uncover the concrete challenges that can arise in the encounter between people and the built environment. The description focuses on the human consequences, where even small physical obstacles, such as sand in a playground, can lead to social exclusion and a feeling of being left out of the community. At the same time, it highlights the importance of thinking universal design into the planning and layout of urban spaces, so that more people have the opportunity to participate on equal terms, and how small design changes can have a major impact on the experience of inclusion, dignity and belonging.
