Design

Design that goes with age

As the body ages, new needs arise — how do you approach this as a furniture designer?

That is the task students of the Royal Academy were asked in the project “Furniture for our future selves.” Here, the students of the degree programme in furniture design investigated how a chair can be transformed from one appearance to another in interaction with demographic changes and expectations of older generations. Because with furniture for life, it has to be changed as needed.

“Universal design — where you design for everyone, forever, so to speak — is an interesting way to go in relation to this project,” says Nicolai de Gier, Professor of Furniture Design and project manager together with Associate Professor and member of the Bevica Foundation's research network, Masashi Kajita.
