Copenhagen Municipality

The development of Copenhagen must happen on the basis of universal design. Under the heading 'From accessibility to universal design', the City of Copenhagen and the Bevica Foundation have entered into a strategic partnership with the aim of anchoring knowledge about universal design across the municipality's administrations. The partnership is the result of the Municipality of Copenhagen's title as World Capital of Architecture 2023,which it carried as part of the UIA World Congress of Archits that same year.

Many people with disabilities and temporary impairments experience barriers that prevent them from moving freely in urban spaces and participate on an equal basis with other people. It's not necessarily the disability per se that is the obstacle; instead it's the way we have designed and built the city that makes it difficult or impossible for some people to participate.

In the Municipal Planning Strategy of Copenhagen 2023, it is determined that the City of Copenhagen should plan and develop the city based on the principles of universal design, so that the city becomes more accessible to more people. Similar wording can be found in the City of Copenhagen's disability policy 2023-2026, where it is further mentioned that universal design and accessibility must be considered in the solutions that the City of Copenhagen makes; both in terms of physical space, digital solutions, municipal websites and in the design og services to the city's residents.

The partnership between the Bevica Foundation and the City of Copenhagen will ensure that the Copenhagen integrates the latest knowledge in universal design in order to be able to work with the concept in the development and management of the city. This should lead to even more people with disabilities or impairments, both permanent and temporary, being able to visit and live a dignified life in Copenhagen.

The partnership builds upon a partnership established in 2021 in connection with Copenhagen's title as Capital of Architecture 2023, the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture (WCA).
