Person sitting on the specialized bench

In conjunction with the Foundation's 150th anniversary in 2022, students from the Royal Academy built the venue “A Place for All”. The furniture is built in close collaboration with the Association of Young People with Disabilities and draws on knowledge of universal design and with social and green sustainability at the heart.

'A space for all' is the result of a short design sprint and with a short time from idea to product. But despite the simple expression of the furniture, they represent action behind the ambition for sustainability: the furniture shows with simple touches how diversity, social and 'green' sustainability can inspire exciting designs that can (literally) give space to all of us.

The furniture is built on the basis of 'a diverse human view' and the Universal Design philosophy. Students from the Academy and volunteers from the Association of Young People with Disabilities (SUMH) have, through design sprint and subsequent development and building of the furniture, together designed 'a place for all': the furniture is built to accommodate our differences and provide space for an inclusive community.

The furniture is created from recycled and surplus materials, and is funded in part by the Royal Academy's collaboration in the national initiative LINKED, which binds education, research and business together to innovate and develop sustainable and green solutions for the future. Building the furniture is also supported by the Bevica Foundation and has been produced for use at the Royal Academy on the occasion of the Bevica Foundation's anniversary and event at the Academy on 3 November 2022. Subsequently, the furniture will be placed outside on Campus, as an important contribution to the Academy's focus on sustainability and inclusive communities.
