Advancing Spatial Equity Through AI: A Study of Universal Design Principles in the Public Sphere

Tackling the lack of diverse and equitable urban space is Aleksandra Mostovaja’s primary area of interest. Aleksandra will be working as a co-researcher at an already existing research project at The University of Montreal called Inclusive Streets AI project/AI-EDI. Here she will be adjusting the parameters for the existing AI tools so that they match the Universal Design principles and analyze the role of language in AI research. This will be under the guidance of The UNESCO Chair of Urban Landscape, Shin Koseki, the UNESCO research team and Rashid Mushkani, the PhD student.

Aleksandra plans to conduct her investigation at Montreal, Canada from February to May 2024.

Article in Mellem Rum

I am thrilled to announce that my article on the importance of diversity and spatial justice in architecture has now been published on Mellem Rum, a magazine that explores the complexity of architecture and the spatial dimension of culture.

Thanks to Karl Emil Koch, the editor of Mellem Rum, for giving me this opportunity to share my thoughts on challenging conventional norms. The article explores the concept of universal design and its transformative impact on our approach to architecture.

February 2024

I am very excited to start my internship and research project at the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape at the University de Montreal! I will be working on exploring how we can use AI to create more inclusive urban spaces and how language can affect these AI models. Thank you to the Chair for welcoming me so warmly this last week.

The end of the internship

What an incredible 4 months it has been at the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape!

I had the privilege of working on three transformative projects: the AI UX Inclusive project, the AI AI project, and my own research, the AI Language Impact Study. The experience culminated in a presentation and workshop where I gathered data that I am publishing with Shin Koseki in a peer-reviewed journal soon.

A huge thank you to the UX/UI Inclusive project team for the opportunity to develop a tool to assess inclusivity in user interfaces and experiences. The AI AI project team was equally inspiring, focusing on creating AI models that generate more diverse and inclusive images.

Special thanks to Jayne Engle from McGill University and Dark Matters Lab for our enlightening discussions on topics like the 7 generations. Your insights have been invaluable!

I am also deeply grateful to Gonzalo Lizarralde from the Université de Montréal for his inspiring conversations about the inner workings of NGOs, opening up exciting new avenues for future research.

Meeting Pierre-Étienne Gendron-Landry from Société Logique was another highlight, providing fantastic ideas for implementing Universal Design in Denmark.

I am immensely thankful to everyone who made my stay so memorable. All of this was possible thanks to the generous support from the Bevica Fonden. Stine Louring Nielsen, your support has been instrumental in making this journey a success.

Thank you all for an unforgettable experience!
