CO-DESIGNING OUT ABLEISM - Inclusive healthcare technologies by all

In Marie's research project, she explores how emerging technology, such as Extended Reality (XR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), can be inclusively designed to enrich the well-being of citizens in hospital environments and strengthen the overall healthcare practice. She critically asks: How can Universal Design frame the ethical adaptation of emerging technologies in hospital environments? Enhancing justice, personal agency, comfort and social presence for citizens with diverse abilities, including those with disabilities, within both somatic and psychiatric care. While emerging technologies promise expanded capacity and connection, their design and development are frequently optimised for fast results, often driven by commercial gain rather than ethics, empathy and equity. This research investigates and redesigns this misalignment, prioritising care contexts such as hospitals where humans must come before the machine.

This project will critically examine the current integration and development of these emerging technologies, exploring their impact on citizens. This project positions Universal Design to be our guiding light tower, safely steering us towards new horizons as we are trying to navigate these unmapped waters. In hospitals, citizens often navigate the turbulent waters of uncertainty, vulnerability, and stress. Likewise, Universal Design does not erase human differences; instead, it creates conditions where these differences can coexist without hierarchy, allowing every user to navigate with equal dignity. Marie plans to conduct her research through visits to leading research labs in U.S and across EU, connecting academic research and industry relevance. Moreover, she will be attending international conferences throughout 2026.
